The Cube
"There's something shiny out in the field"
"Why don't you go see what it is?"
"Mom! I'm only seven."
"Where is it?"
Ben pointed out the window toward the corn field. His Mother, thirty four
year old Janet Brown went to the window and dropped the plate of food
she was cooking. There was a giant block of ice bigger than the house in
the middle of the corn.
She stared in disbelief. Whatever it was it wasn't there an hour ago when
she started making dinner. It was the middle of August for crying out loud,
almost a hundred degrees outside. "Why is there ice in our field?" She
asked Ben as if he had an answer.
"Don't know Mom."
She looked down at her son and tried not to show her fear. "Run to the
barn Benjamin. Get your father."
"I want to go see the ice."
"Just go do what I told you. Go now!"
A few minutes later Joe Brown stood at the window with his wife and son.
"What do you think it is?" Janet asked.
Joe stared out the window and didn't answer for a long moment. "I don't
know." He finally said. Then he turned to his wife. "You didn't hear
anything?" She nodded no. "You didn't see anything?"
"No Joe. I know as much as you do."
"Call the Sheriff. I'm going out there....
